How to Install an RV Holding Tank Rinser

Ever wake up at 3am in a cold sweat wondering if your RV holding tanks are clean? Probably not but installing a holding tank rinser will ensure this never happens to you. This RV modification will give you peace of mind so that the next time you use your toilet or sink after a long storage period, no stinky odors will gag you out of your RV.

Step 1: Find a suitable location

Installation of the Tornado tank rinser is straightforward but there are a few things to consider. The instructions say to mount the Tornado on the end of the tank opposite the tank outlet about 3/4 up from the bottom of the tank. This may not be possible depending on how your tank is mounted. If this is the case, an alternate location would be on the side of the tank as close to the end of the tank as possible. Also be sure that you have emptied the tank completely before proceeding. otherwise, you'll have a nice stinky mess on your hands. 

Step 2: Drill the hole 

Once you locate the position to install the Tornado, clean around the area so that after you drill the mounting hole, the sealant used between the tank and the Tornado will adhere properly. Mark the center of the mounting location with the template provided and with a 1 1/8″ hole saw, carefully drill through the tank taking care to not drop the plastic removed in to the tank. If you do, you may, after installing the Tornado, have to fill the tank completely and flush the tank of the plastic.

Step 3: Install rinser and seal 

Next, apply a bead of silicone sealant around the hole and insert the Tornado in to the hole. Secure the Tornado to the tank using the self-tapping screws provided. Wipe off the excess sealant (if any) for a clean look. Now you get to take a break for about 24 hours so the silicone sealant can cure. This is very important since you don't want the flange to move at all while drying. Leakage can occur if you try to complete the installation before the sealant has dried.

Step 4: Route water supply hose 

Now that it's the next day, you can finish up by connecting the provided hose to the rinser using the provided fitting and hose clamp. Don't overtighten the clamp as this could cause tearing of the clear hose and possible leakage. Route the plastic hose to a convenient location near the dump valves. Use tie-wraps to secure the hose so it doesn't hang down. Using the L-bracket provided, secure the water inlet to the frame or flooring. An alternative way to secure the L-bracket is to use a 4″ hose clamp and mount the bracket to the dump valve tube. Installation is now complete.

Step 5: Operating the rinser 

To operate, simply attach an ordinary garden hose to the the water inlet and turn on the water. You will hear a whirring noise from the tank. This is normal as the Tornado spins under water pressure so that it sprays everywhere inside of the tank. Be sure to check for leaks while the system is in use. At the dump station, allow the the tank to empty for a few seconds before turning on the water supply to the Tornado. This will help the sprayer to get some of the gunk off the top of the tank. Let the rinser run for a minute or so after the tank is empty to ensure complete cleaning. Happy dumping!

Tip: Dual tank rinsers 

You can also fit your gray water tank with a Tornado rinser. Perform the same steps as above and when it comes time to attach the water supply hose to the water inlet, use a "Y" fitting with shutoff valves instead so you can rinse either tank independently, or both at the same time.

Cutting Common Rafters

Common rafters are, well, the most common rafter when it comes to residential roof framing. Gable roofs are built with all common rafters, as are shed roofs. A hip roof, depending on the length of the building, has at least four common rafters. The rest of the rafters in a hip roof are called hip and jack rafters.

The first step in cutting a common rafter is finding its length. To find the length one must know the distance the rafters must span to make up the roof. The span is found by measuring the width of the building. This measurement is taken from the outside of the walls including the wall sheathing. If the width of the building is 30 feet, and the roof pitch is a 6/12, these are the factors that will be used to find the rafter length.

There are several methods that are used to get the rafter length. Two of the most popular means of finding that rafter length are the construction calculator and rafter table books (The Full Length Roof Framer by A. F. J. Riechers). Both ways will give a precise number to cut your rafter to.

For our example we will use the 30 foot building width and a pitch of 6/12. This means our rafters will rise 6 inches for every 12 inches of run. Using the book "The Full Length Roof Framer", and opening it to the rafter tables for a 6/12 pitch, you will find all kinds of information about that roof pitch. Under the common rafter table and the span column in feet, read down till you find 30 feet. Next to it you will find the length of the rafter which is 16'9 1/4". This is the length of the rafter but there are a few more calculations to be factored in.

To lay out the rafter cuts on a 2x, I like to use a framing square. I feel its more precise than a speed square, which is a great layout tool in its own right.

To start, pick out a straight 2x to make your rafter cut layout on. This will be your pattern to cut all your common rafters from. If it has any crown at all, that will be the top of your rafter. Lay the 2x on a pair of horses with the top away from you. Since our roof pitch is a 6/12, these will be the numbers we will use on the framing square.

Starting on the left end of our 2x, lay the framing square on the 2x with 6" on the outside edge of the tongue on the bottom edge of the 2x. Put 12"on the outside edge of the body of the square on the bottom edge of the 2x. Move the top of the tongue till it hits the upper left hand corner of the 2x. Scribe a line along the outside edge of the framing squares tongue. This is your plumb cut. If there will be a ridge board, the rafter will have to be shortened half the distance of the ridge. We'll get to that a little later. There are brass stair gauges that can be bought that clamp onto the square at the pitch you are using. Instead of lining up 6" and 12" every time, all you need to do is bump the gauges to the bottom of the 2x.

To get the length of the rafter to the birdsmouth, hook your tape measure to the upper left hand corner of the 2x. Pull the tape and mark 16' 9 1/4" on the top edge of the 2x. Put the framing square at 6" and 12" on the bottom of the 2x and line up the tongue of the square with the mark on the top edge of the 2x. This line represents the outside of the wall and the back of the birdsmouth.

The level cut for the birdsmouth is usually the thickness of the wall. If it is a 2x4 wall with 1/2" sheathing, the level cut for the birdsmouth will be 4" long. To mark the birdsmouth, put the tongue of the square against the line. On the outside edge of the body, put 4" on the bottom edge of the 2x and draw a line on the outside edge of the square. The birdsmouth should end up being 2" deep.

Say we want to add an overhang to our rafters. In this instance lets say we want to add 12". Since we are adding 12" to the rafters on both sides of the house, we need to add two feet to our 30' span. Again we go to our rafter table book ("The Full Length Roof Framer"). Open the book to the 6/12 page and look up the span for 32 feet. The overall length of our rafter will increase to 17' 10 5/8".

To mark the plumb cut on the rafter tail, pull the tape from the upper left hand corner of our 2x (long point of our plumb cut). Mark 17' 10 5/8" on the top edge of the 2x. Again put 6" and 12" of the framing square on the bottom edge of the 2x and line it up with the mark on top of the 2x. Draw a line along the squares edge and this will be your tail cut.

Two more things must be considered to complete the layout of our rafter. As mentioned earlier, our rafter must be shortened to allow for the thickness of the ridge. In most cases the ridge board is a 2x or 1 1/2" thick. This means we must deduct one half the thickness of the ridge from our rafters or 3/4". On our 2x mark another line 3/4" to the right of our original plumb cut line. Do not measure along the top edge of the 2x but rather off of our original line. Either make one mark and draw a 6/12 pitch or make two marks and draw a line through them. Either way will work. This is your new cut line. Mark out our erase the original line so as not to get confused.

The other consideration is shortening the rafter tail to allow for the thickness of the fascia board. If the fascia is to be a 1x, shorten the tail 3/4". If its a 2x, shorten it 1 1/2". Shorten the tail cut in the same manner as the plumb cut. Make a line the thickness of the fascia parallel to the original rafter tail cut line. Again cross out the original line to lessen the confusion. The bottom of the tail cut may have to be clipped so it doesn't hang below the fascia board.

You now have the layout for a common rafter. You can now cut the lines that are marked on the 2x. When making these cuts, make them straight and with precision as this will be the pattern for marking and cutting the rest of the common rafters. When cutting out the birdsmouth, its okay to overcut the lines to completely remove the material.

I like to nail stops to the top of my rafter pattern. I use scraps of plywood about 4" long and about 3" wide. I nail one about 3 to 4 inches from the plumb cut, letting it hang over 3/4" on each side of the rafter. The other stop is nailed just above the birdsmouth, hanging over 3/4" each side of the rafter. Now all one has to do is put the stops against the crowned side of the 2x and trace the cuts to be made. If you laid out all your rafters individually, it would probably take 4 times longer or more.

It might sound like a complicated process, but after you have done this a couple times you can see how easy it can be.

How To Choose The Right Router Bit

The router is one of the most versatile tools in the workshop. With the correct bits you can form edges, add decorative inlays and even make raised panel doors. Practice is the key to successful routing. However, the right bit is just as important. In this article I'll offer a basic guide to ensure you choose the bits you need for the job.

Before you get started I'd like to offer some important tips to make things easier. First try to use sharp bits. They will retain their sharpness for a long time in normal use. A dull bit can damaged the work. Try to get the feel of the most efficient cutting movement. The bit should cut easily with only slight reduction in motor speed. Moving it too slowly through the wood may burn it and ruin the temper of the bit. Moving it too fast slows the motor and causes overheating. Practice on scrap wood and watch your performance carefully. The sound of the tool is an excellent guide, once you achieve efficient cutting. At the beginning, stop the tool frequently and check the cut for burned areas caused by too slow movements. It only takes a few minutes of practice to get the knack of using a router.

As you can see the choice of the right bit seems a bit daunting. Fear not and start with simple projects and work your way into the more difficult jobs that require the use of several routers. With time and experience you should become adept at picking the right bits with little to no trouble.

Just as important in picking the right router bit is learning how to change them, adjusting the cutting depth, and using a router guide.

Inserting router bits: Disconnect router from the power supply. Using two wrenches (unless your router comes equipped with a locking device to prevent the shaft from turning) hold the lower nut in place and turn the collet until the bit is easy to remove. Insert the new bit; again hold the lower nut in place while tightening the collet nut. Make sure it is tight as the last thing you want is for the bit to come out while it's turning at high rate of speed.

Adjusting the cutting depth: Place router on a flat surface. Loosen locking nut and turn the collar until the bit just touches the surface of the work. Slide the router to the edge of the work until the bit is just past it. Turn collar until the bit is at the desired depth. Lock collar and tighten locking nut.

What is a router guide? The guide keeps the bit at the exact desired distance from the edge of the work. The guide adjusts to and from the router base and is held in place by locking screws. These guides are available for most models.

By know you should have a basic understanding of the types of router bits and their uses, as well as some tips to help you along the way. Just remember to take your time and watch your work area, and above all be safe.

I've always thought that being given a small token of appreciation when donating to a cause was a lovely gesture. Sure, having been in marketing for most of my life this is a well known strategy. But I'm not talking only textbook here - I'm talking about the feeling one gets when they are acknowledged for giving of themselves to a cause (monetarily and/or otherwise).

Because breast cancer has so personally touched me through friends and family I would like to share some tips if you are looking to raise money for this cause. Please let me say that I am not talking about the solicitation of large donations from individuals - that is a whole different art and science. I'm talking about if you are holding an event like a walk or a race, or an event where the cost to attend is less than , or simply putting out a request for donations. In such cases keep these things in mind:
People loved to be 'thanked' (its a type of acknowledgment and everyone likes to be acknowledged). It can be as simple as a heartfelt look in the eye and handshake while saying the words "Thank You". That and a small gift is especially nice. Make it personalized. If you can personalize the thank you gift/token to the event or cause it's a plus. For example, if you are giving glass magnets with a pink ribbon design and you can personalize them so that they say "Fenton 10K Run, 8.02.09" it is especially meaningful and will be used with pride. Tie it to the cause. If you can give something that one associates with the cause so much the better. For example: a pink picture frame, a pink candle, etc. Make it something someone would want to receive. Bumper stickers, car magnets and/or buttons are not always the most appreciated of gifts. Try to tailor it to who is purchasing. If you know that the event will mainly attract females then giving 'female friendly' tokens of your appreciation such as pink manicure sets, pink compact mirrors, pink candles, etc.
